Carl Reinecke (1824-1910) was a German composer, conductor, pianist, and influential teacher who held prominent positions throughout the 19th century, including director of the Leipzig Conservatory and conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. A champion of Classical and early Romantic ideals, Reinecke was closely associated with figures like Mendelssohn, Schumann, and later Brahms. His extensive output of over 300 published works includes symphonies, chamber music, piano works, all marked by lyrical elegance and structural clarity. Fantasie on "Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht," Op. 221, No. 2 is a tender homage to Franz Gruber’s beloved carol Silent Night. Reinecke treats the familiar melody with affection and restraint, crafting a nostalgic, lullaby-like setting that captures the spirit of quiet reverence. This arrangement for flute quartet is scored for two C flutes, alto flute, and bass flute.
